How To Claim Boiler Scrappage Allowance

Boiler Scrappage Scheme: How does it work?

On 9th December 2010 Alistair Darling announced that £50 million would be invested in a Boiler Scrappage Scheme, covering upto 125,000 homes in England.  A Green Boiler Incentive of £400 will be made available to households who replace their old gas boiler with a new A rated energy efficient condensing boiler or renewable heat unit.

Details of how the scheme will work are being thrashed out between government officials, manufacturers, retailers and lobbyists Reheat Britain.  The policy has been announced but the ‘devil will be in the detail’.

Here are the latest Boiler Scrappage Scheme facts as we know them:

When will the Scheme start?

Details were announced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change on 5th January.

You can apply now, and vouchers will be issued from 18th January so your boiler would need to be replaced after this date.

How will it work?

1) Before applying for a voucher, you need to check your boiler is G-rated and get a quote.

2) Submit your details and the details of your contractor and boiler to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), who will issue a voucher.

3) You then claim £400 back using the voucher and an invoice that shows the work was carried out.

4) The EST quote that they will pay back the money within 25 working days.

What’s defined as an ‘old boiler’ within the Scheme?

The new scrappage scheme covers ‘old’ Band ‘G’ gas boilers.  It is estimated that there are currently 4.5 million Band ‘G’ gas boilers in use in the UK over 15 years old that are typically only around 60% efficient. They waste 40 pence in every £1 of energy used and generate 1 tonne of additional CO2 each year.

How do I know if my current boiler is Band G rated?

All gas boilers have a SEDBUK rating.  The scheme was developed with boiler manufacturers and the government and provides comparison of average boiler efficiency. All boilers are now rated in Bands A – G, with A being the most efficient. You can find out the rating of your boiler by using the SEDBUK database here http://www.sedbuk.com/

How much can I claim?

The government have announced that each household that scraps a working G rated boiler will receive an incentive of £400. The total number of boilers covered in the first year will be 125,000. Hope is that the scheme will be extended if demand is high.

I have an oil-fired boiler can I claim?

Still to be confirmed but there is a belief that G rated oil-fired boilers will be included.

I want to install solar powered heating, can I claim?

Yes “renewable heat units” will definitely be eligible for the £400 green incentive payment, for those who want to replace their G rated gas boiler with a solar power system.

I live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Will the scheme apply here?

These countries have separate systems for energy efficiency grants and are not included in the current Boiler Scrappage Scheme announced by the government, which will apply only in England.

However Reheat Britain is lobbying hard for budget to be released to the devolved Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies to exactly replicate England’s scheme.
